A room full of exercise equipment, a rack having some dumbells, maybe a music system, a small changing room and a trainer guy who looks like a ‘bouncer’ are probably the basic things which make up the gym. I have been going to a gym for almost a year now (Not counting the breaks…of course!!). I have achieved a considerable degree of progress………….in the sense that I love to just shout out loudly when I am lifting something heavy, I love to hear the music at a volume that probably would burst others ear drums and I now walk like a guy who has a plank of wood stuck between his sides and his arms. Apart from this, I have managed to build my body just a teensy weensy bit.
Apart from the workouts I have, over the years, observed, a lot of people who come to the gym….their exercise habits….good, bad and annoying etc, their daily workouts…… their body types (fat and short, short and skinny, skinny and tall, tall and fat etc). First of all……the trainers…….some trainers are known to be aggressive marketeers. A gym I went to, once had a trainer who pep talked all the newcomers on the first day. “I will train you in such a way that you’ll have a great body in a month!!!” People generally left the gym one month later when they did not meet the trainer’s expectation!!!! . Some trainers will be more like ‘caretakers’. They will sit on a chair in the gym shouting orders to anyone who do not keep the weights in their racks. They will collect the fees and write receipts and change the FM radio channel or the music CD. If anyone comes for advice they will direct you to a muscly fellow and simply say ‘ask him’. Apart from these there are good trainers who will give you good workouts, push you, but still not over the edge.
As I have mentioned before the type of people coming to the gym are also worth observing. There will be skinny newcomers who will stand in front of the mirror and will lift the sleeves of his t-shirt when no one is looking and will observe their muscles. Some others who are less shy will do it openly even if they have nothing to flaunt!!! There will be those annoying types who will stand between you and the mirror when you are performing an exercise so that your view is completety blocked. Fat ones, who will sweat like pigs after walking treadmills, turning pink in the face, well built ones who will strut in style throwing their chests out, flaunting muscles and heave and shout when they lift heavy weights screwing their faces as if constipated. And some others who will be very normal……very few of them.
The above views are, of course a few of my observations (sarcastically stated) . I will not list out the advantages of going to the gym as they will not even fit inside a full book. All in all I would personally advice you to go to a health club…. Don’t overdo weight training; don’t build your body like there’s no end to it and you start looking like a gorilla. Build a lean and muscular physique, increase your fitness levels and stay healthy. ‘Health is Wealth’. Be brawny and stay brainy!!!!
